Gillingham is well placed for half- and full-day trips. Rochester, with its Norman castle and cathedral, is two stops up the line. The Historic Dockyard at Chatham — the cradle of Britain's wooden-walls navy, with three covered slipways and HMS Cavalier — is a short bus ride across town. London is 45 minutes by high-speed train to St Pancras. Canterbury, with its cathedral and Roman walls, is an hour by train via Faversham.
