Gillingham is best treated as a working town with a couple of strong specific attractions rather than a destination in its own right. The Royal Engineers Museum is one of the best of Britain's small military museums. The Strand has the riverside, a small lido, and views across to the Hoo Peninsula. Football fans should head to Priestfield. Most cultural visitors will use Gillingham as a quiet, cheaper base for Rochester Castle and Cathedral or the Historic Dockyard at Chatham.
