Aylesford Priory

Carmelite priory on the River Medway with medieval roots, chapels, gardens, and pilgrimage history.

Aylesford Priory, known as The Friars, is a peaceful Carmelite site on the River Medway just outside Maidstone. Its story reaches back to the medieval friars, but the present appeal is a mix of chapels, cloisters, gardens, and a working religious community.

It is not as famous as Leeds Castle, yet it rewards slower travellers. Come for a quiet walk, the sense of continuity, and a view of Kentish religious history that is gentler and more lived-in than a ruined abbey or museum display.
