Day Trips

The countryside around Maidstone is the main reason to spend time here, and several excellent day trips are within easy reach.

Leeds Castle, five miles south-east, is the most obvious first excursion — one of the most photographed castles in England, sitting on two islands in a lake with extensive grounds to explore. A dedicated shuttle bus runs from Maidstone town centre.

The Kent Downs AONB stretches south and east from Maidstone, with good walking in the Weald of Kent through orchards, hop gardens, and quiet villages. The North Downs Way long-distance footpath passes north of the town and connects to the coast.

Sissinghurst Castle Garden (National Trust), about 15 miles south-east, is one of England's most celebrated gardens — designed by Vita Sackville-West in the 1930s around the ruins of a Tudor mansion. Worth the detour in any season but particularly in early summer when the Rose Garden peaks.

Rochester, about 12 miles north-west, has a Norman cathedral and castle, a strong Dickens connection (he lived nearby at Gad's Hill), and a well-preserved historic town centre. Easy by train or car.

Hever Castle, about 16 miles to the west, is the childhood home of Anne Boleyn — a moated medieval castle with good gardens and strong Tudor history exhibits.
