Maidstone is accessible year-round and most indoor attractions are unaffected by weather. The best time to visit depends on whether you are prioritising the town itself or the surrounding countryside.
Spring (April–June) is the most pleasant time to be in rural Kent. The orchards around the Weald are in blossom in April and May, the hop gardens are green, and the Kent Downs walking is at its best before summer heat sets in. Leeds Castle and its grounds look best in this period.
Summer (July–August) is warm (typically 18–24°C) and the countryside is in full green. The main visitor season for Leeds Castle and the Medway valley villages; booking ahead for popular sites is wise.
Autumn (September–October) brings hop-picking season — a traditional Kent event with an active harvest festival culture in the villages around Maidstone. The countryside colour in October is good.
Winter is quiet, and the town centre is less appealing. Leeds Castle runs Christmas events that draw visitors from December onward.
