Hovertravel Terminal

Tucked at the western end of Southsea Common is the world's longest-running passenger hovercraft service. Hovertravel runs a craft about every half hour across to Ryde on the Isle of Wight, ten minutes each way over the shallow Solent.

Even if you don't need to go to the island, the hovercraft is an attraction in its own right — you board through a steel door, the propellers howl, and you charge straight off the slipway and out across the sea. Tickets are not cheap but the experience is unique. The terminal building itself is a piece of 1960s engineering kitsch.

A story
Portsmouth to Ryde is the world's only year-round commercial hovercraft passenger service. The route has been operating continuously since 1965 — older than the Eurostar, the Channel Tunnel, and even most modern aircraft. The crossing takes ten minutes, regardless of tides.
