Spice Island Inn

One of the great waterside pubs of southern England. The terrace at the back is set on a stone pier projecting into the harbour mouth, and the cross-Channel ferries pass close enough to wave at on their way out. There's been a pub on this spot for around four hundred years; the present 19th-century building keeps a warren of small rooms with low ceilings inside.

Beer is the usual run of mainstream British ales and one or two guests; the food is decent pub stuff. Get there early on a sunny evening — the outdoor tables fill up by six.
