The chalk ridge that defines Portsmouth from the north, rising to 130 metres about three miles inland. On a clear day the view from the top covers the entire harbour, the whole of Portsea Island, the Solent, Spithead, the Isle of Wight, and on exceptionally clear evenings the cliffs of the New Forest twenty miles to the west.
Several lay-bys along the B2177 (the "London Road" along the crest) let you stop. The summit is best reached on foot or by bicycle from the city below. The chain of Palmerston forts (Fort Nelson is open as a museum; Fort Widley and Fort Purbrook can be visited) runs along the crest.
