Things to Do

Rochester packs a surprising amount of history into a very small space. The compact historic centre clusters around a Norman castle and one of England's oldest cathedrals, with a well-preserved High Street running between them. Charles Dickens knew this town intimately — he spent much of his adult life nearby at Gad's Hill Place, and Rochester features thinly disguised in several of his novels. The city celebrates that connection enthusiastically, with a major Dickens Festival in June and a Victorian Christmas festival in December.

Beyond the Dickens heritage, Rochester rewards slow wandering. The medieval and Georgian buildings along the High Street have aged gracefully, and the riverfront gives a sense of why the Medway crossing here mattered so much for a thousand years. Chatham Historic Dockyard, one of Britain's finest maritime heritage sites, is just five minutes away and makes for a natural addition to any visit.
