Cuckmere Haven

River mouth and floodplain below the Seven Sisters, loved for meanders, cliffs, and coastal walking.

Cuckmere Haven is where the River Cuckmere reaches the sea between Seaford Head and the Seven Sisters. The valley floor, river bends, coastguard cottages, and chalk cliffs make it one of the most recognisable landscapes in Sussex.

Walk there from Seaford over the headland, then return by bus or on foot if you have the energy. It is exposed in wind and sun, and the beach at the mouth is more about scenery than comfort.

A story
The Cuckmere's old meanders are so photogenic that they can look almost artificial from above. They are the result of a river allowed to wind through low floodplain before meeting the Channel between chalk cliffs.
