When to Go

Winchester is a year-round destination, but spring and early autumn are particularly pleasant — the water meadows are at their best when the ranunculus is flowering in May and June, and the cathedral close is beautiful in the warm light of September and October. Summer brings more visitors and some queues at the cathedral.

The Winchester Christmas Market, held in the cathedral close from late November into December, is one of the better Christmas markets in England and draws large crowds. Book accommodation well in advance if visiting then. The Winchester Hat Fair, held in late June or early July, is a free outdoor arts festival that takes over the streets and public spaces of the city.
