Winchester's historic core is compact and walkable. The cathedral is the obvious starting point, but the city rewards time spent wandering: the medieval Westgate and Kingsgate still stand, the water meadows along the Itchen are exceptional, and Winchester College has been educating England's elite in the same buildings since 1382. The High Street climbs from the medieval gate to the Butter Cross, with the cathedral precinct opening off it to the south.
