Runnymede is the riverside meadow about 4 miles south-east of Windsor where King John signed the Magna Carta in June 1215. The actual signing took place somewhere among the meadows — no one knows exactly where — but the site is now a National Trust property with several memorials clustered along the river.
The American Bar Association raised a small classical temple here in 1957, the British government built a Magna Carta Memorial alongside it, and a third memorial — to John F. Kennedy, on land formally ceded to the United States in 1965 — sits on the hillside above. The Ankerwycke Yew, said to be 2,000 years old and possibly the actual tree under which the Magna Carta was sealed, stands across the river. Easy to reach by car or on foot along the Thames Path.
