St George's Chapel is one of the great works of English Gothic — a late-medieval Perpendicular chapel begun by Edward IV in 1475 and finished in the 1520s, with a fan-vaulted ceiling, painted heraldic banners of the Knights of the Garter hanging in the choir, and the carved Garter stalls themselves crowded with the helmets, crests, and swords of the present knights.
The chapel doubles as the royal mausoleum: Henry VIII lies beneath the choir, Charles I rests with him, and beneath the floor of the King George VI Memorial Chapel are George VI, the Queen Mother, Princess Margaret, Prince Philip, and Queen Elizabeth II. The royal weddings of Harry and Meghan, and Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank, took place here in 2018.
