Windsor and Royal Borough Museum

The Windsor and Royal Borough Museum, housed inside the Guildhall on the High Street, is the local history museum for Windsor and Maidenhead. The collection covers the town from prehistoric times — there are Bronze Age finds from the Thames — through Roman, Saxon, and medieval Windsor to the more recent past. The displays are compact and unfussy.

The museum's strongest sections deal with the relationship between the town and the royal household: the patronage of monarchs, the changing role of the castle, and the everyday details of life in a town built around a royal residence. Admission is free and a visit takes about an hour.
