St Mary Steps is a small medieval church on the edge of Exeter's old West Quarter, close enough to the quay and city centre to fold into a walk rather than treat as a separate excursion. Its main curiosity is the exterior clock, whose figures have made it one of the city's more memorable minor landmarks.
The church is not as essential as Exeter Cathedral or the Roman walls, but it adds texture to the older streets below the centre. It is best visited as part of a slow loop through Stepcote Hill, the quay approaches, and the surviving fragments of historic Exeter.
