The Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts — Glasto — is the largest and most celebrated greenfield music festival in the world. It is held most years in late June on Worthy Farm at Pilton, about 10 miles east of Glastonbury town. Headliners over the decades have included David Bowie, Beyoncé, Paul McCartney, Adele, Stevie Wonder, and the Rolling Stones; on the smaller stages the line-up is genuinely eclectic, from afrobeat to folk to dance music to circus.
A fallow year takes place every five years to let the land recover. Tickets sell out within minutes of going on sale in November and are notoriously hard to get. Many visitors come to Glastonbury town in festival week without tickets, to soak up the atmosphere — but be warned, the town fills up and prices rise. For the festival itself, the site is at Worthy Farm, BA4 4BY.
