Church of St John the Baptist

15th-century parish church on the High Street, with a famously tall tower

The parish church of St John the Baptist stands at the centre of the High Street and is one of the great Somerset towers — over 40 metres tall, finished around 1480. The interior is light and lofty, with a fine medieval rood screen, painted ceiling bosses, and a 15th-century stained-glass window showing the Tree of Jesse.

A descendant of the Glastonbury Thorn grows in the churchyard. The church is normally open during the day; the small donation box near the door funds upkeep. A useful free stop while walking down the High Street between the Tor and the Abbey.
