The Tribunal

15th-century townhouse and Lake Village Museum on the High Street

The Tribunal is one of the oldest secular buildings in Glastonbury, a stone-fronted 15th-century house on the High Street. Despite the name — it was used for many years as the abbot's court — its current contents have little to do with law. The ground floor holds the Glastonbury Tourist Information Centre and a small shop; the upper floor is a museum displaying finds from the Glastonbury Lake Village.

The Lake Village artefacts are remarkable: an Iron Age settlement, occupied around 250 BC to 50 AD, built on a wooden platform over the marsh north of town. Waterlogged conditions preserved organic material that would have rotted anywhere else — wooden bowls, woven baskets, leather, even a fragment of cloth. Worth half an hour for archaeology fans.
