A dry valley running parallel to the coast about one kilometre west of Lynton, the Valley of Rocks is the most striking landscape in the immediate area. Its ridgeline is occupied by jagged rock formations — Castle Rock, Rugged Jack, the White Lady — that rise directly from moorland and look nothing like the smooth green hills surrounding them. Feral goats have colonised the outcrops and are completely indifferent to visitors.
The valley is reached on foot in about 30 minutes from Lynton along a signed coast path, or by a narrow road if you're driving. Either way, the approach through the valley from the Lynton end with the sea below gives the best first impression. There's a small car park at the far end.
