A large bronze sculpture of two open hands holding a map marks the official start of the South West Coast Path on Minehead's seafront, just past the harbour. From here, 630 miles of waymarked path run round the entire peninsula to Poole in Dorset — England's longest National Trail and one of the great long-distance walks in Europe.
Even if you have no intention of walking the whole thing, the first few miles out of Minehead are beautiful: the path climbs steeply onto North Hill through oak woodland and bracken, with views back across the Bristol Channel to Wales on a clear day. A short loop up to Burgundy Chapel and back is an excellent half-day taster.
