The Huer's Hut

The little whitewashed building on the cliff above Newquay harbour is the old Huer's Hut, a 14th-century watchman's post used to spot incoming shoals of pilchards. The huer (from the Cornish for "to call out") would signal to the fishing boats below, marshalling them around the catch.

The hut has been restored several times and is closed to the public, but the path past it gives wonderful views over the headland and harbour. Combine it with a walk along the South West Coast Path towards Porth.

A story
When a shoal of pilchards appeared offshore, the huer would shout "hevva, hevva" through a long bullhorn and direct the boats below with cloth flags — a precursor to harbour radio that worked until pilchard stocks collapsed in the early 20th century.
