The Island

The Island is the small rocky outcrop just off Towan Beach, joined to the mainland by a thin private suspension bridge. A single house sits on top, occasionally rented to celebrities and the very wealthy, and is otherwise closed to the public.

For a photograph it is one of the best in Cornwall — a Victorian curiosity dangling over the Atlantic. The view from the cliff above the beach is the place to take it; you cannot cross the bridge yourself.

A story
The Island became fully detached from the mainland after a Victorian rock-fall. The current footbridge — a slender 22-metre suspension span — was installed in 1900 so that the owner of the house on top could come and go.
