Ledbury has been on the food map since chef Mark Stinchcombe took over Eckington Manor nearby and Shaun Hill's old protégés started running its kitchens, but the town itself has remained sensibly unpretentious about it. Two pubs and a handful of cafes do all the work.
The Feathers Hotel on the High Street is the right choice for a proper lunch — bar food and local Herefordshire beef under 450-year-old oak beams. The Talbot Hotel on New Street is the other historic coaching inn, with a quieter dining room. For coffee and lunch, Three Counties Coffee Roastery on the High Street and the Mousetrap Cheese Shop lunch counter on Church Lane are the two reliable stops; the latter does the best cheese-and-ham toastie in the county.
For a longer meal, the Three Tuns at nearby Bromsberrow and the Butchers Arms at Woolhope are both worth the short drive. Local specialities to watch for: Hereford beef, cider-glazed pork, perry pears, and the indispensable Hereford Hop, a cheese rolled in toasted hops.
