Things to Do

Ledbury is a place to walk, not a place to tick off sights. The High Street is the set-piece — a wide cobbled rake of black-and-white timber-framed buildings running down to the Market House, the 17th-century oak-framed hall raised on chestnut pillars in the middle of the road. From the Market House, narrow Church Lane climbs to St Michael and All Angels, with a separate detached bell-tower that has rung over the town for eight hundred years.

The other deliberate stops are the Painted Room — a 16th-century townhouse whose Tudor wall-paintings were rediscovered behind plaster in the 1980s — and the Master's House, the town's restored medieval almshouse, now the library and tourist information centre. After that, head for the Malvern Hills five miles to the east, the Eastnor Castle estate next door, or one of the cider farms that ring the town.
