Rievaulx Abbey

Grand Cistercian abbey ruins in a quiet valley west of Helmsley.

Rievaulx Abbey is the great ruin near Helmsley, set in the valley of the River Rye. The scale still surprises: tall church walls, arches, and monastic ranges standing in a quiet hollow that feels made for ruins.

It was one of the powerful Cistercian houses of medieval England before the Dissolution ended its life in the sixteenth century. Today it is the strongest single reason to stretch a Helmsley visit beyond the town centre.
