Rievaulx Terrace is a piece of eighteenth-century theatre: a long grass walk on the hillside, temples at either end, and carefully managed views down to the abbey ruins. It was designed to make Rievaulx look even more romantic than it already was.
Visit it with the abbey if you can. The two places explain each other: one is medieval religious power, the other Georgian taste looking back at that power as scenery.
