One of Yorkshire's oldest markets, spreading across the Cornmarket and Market Place in the town centre. The general market runs on Wednesdays and Saturdays, when the stalls fill with local produce, household goods, and the kind of stallholder culture that has largely disappeared from larger towns. It is worth a wander even if you have no particular intention of buying — the market gives Pontefract its working-town character more than anything else in the centre.
