Ripon's historic core is compact and walkable. The cathedral is the centrepiece, but the market square, museum quarter, and the ruins and gardens just outside town are equally worthwhile. On a clear day you can make a satisfying loop: cathedral, market square, the three museums on the edge of the old gaol complex, then drive out to Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal.
