The Magpie Cafe

Whitby's most famous fish-and-chip restaurant, in a black-and-white timbered house on Pier Road.

The Magpie has been serving fish and chips on Pier Road since 1939 and regularly tops "best chippy in Britain" lists. The white-and-black timbered house is unmissable along the West Side harbour front. Cod, haddock, monkfish, plaice and skate all come out of the kitchen, fried in beef dripping in the traditional Yorkshire style.

There are queues most lunchtimes in summer — the takeaway window moves faster than the sit-down restaurant, and you can eat in the gardens above the harbour. Portions are generous and prices have crept up over the years, but the quality is real. Closed for a few weeks in January for maintenance.
