Ebrington Square

Ebrington Square is on the east bank of the Foyle, accessible via the Peace Bridge. The former Ebrington Barracks — a British Army base that was handed over by the military in 2003 — has been redeveloped as a public space with a large open square, a hotel, restaurants, and a permanent concert and events venue.

The square hosts major public events throughout the year, including the Hallowe'en festival, for which Derry has a considerable reputation, and various music and cultural festivals. The architecture of the old barracks buildings (the earliest dating from the 1840s) has been preserved around the edges of the square. From the east bank here you get an excellent view back across the river to the city walls and the cathedral.
