The Foyle Valley Railway Museum, near the Craigavon Bridge on the west bank, preserves the history of the narrow-gauge railways that served County Londonderry. The Londonderry and Lough Swilly Railway and the County Donegal Railways are both represented, with locomotives, rolling stock, and memorabilia from what was once an extensive network of narrow-gauge lines connecting the city to the Donegal hinterland.
The museum is modest but well-organised, and offers short rides on restored diesel railcars in season. The narrow gauge lines it commemorates were an essential part of rural life in this corner of Ireland before they were progressively closed from the 1940s onward. For railway enthusiasts it is an essential stop; for others, a pleasant 45 minutes.
