Ayr is well served by rail. Trains run frequently from Glasgow Central to Ayr, taking about 50 minutes. There are also direct services to Prestwick (for Prestwick Airport, five miles north of Ayr), Girvan, and Stranraer. The station is in the town centre, within easy walking distance of the main streets and the seafront.
By road, Ayr is reached from Glasgow via the A77, which becomes the M77 for most of the journey — typically 40 to 50 minutes in normal traffic. Edinburgh is around 90 minutes by road via the M8 and A77. Prestwick Airport, five miles north, has services to Irish, European, and some long-haul destinations.
The A77 south from Ayr forms the main route to the coastal attractions: Culzean Castle is nine miles south, and the road continues to Ballantrae and Stranraer for the Cairnryan ferry to Northern Ireland.
