Set up in 2017 by a husband-and-wife team from the island, the Isle of Barra Distillery is a small operation on the edge of Castlebay. It currently produces Barra Atlantic Gin, distilled with hand-picked Hebridean carrageen seaweed alongside more conventional botanicals — the result tastes recognisably Scottish but with a maritime saltiness that fits the place.
Single malt whisky is in production, but the distillery has yet to release a fully matured spirit. Tours and tastings run from spring through autumn; book ahead, as group sizes are small.
