Barra is the southernmost inhabited island of the Outer Hebrides, a compact place about eight miles by six miles with a character that punches well above its size. Kisimul Castle — a medieval fortress sitting on a tiny islet in Castlebay harbour — is the ancestral seat of the MacNeil clan and can be reached by small boat from the village.
The island has extraordinary beaches on its west coast, including Tràigh Mhòr at the north end, which doubles as the airport runway — the only scheduled beach landing strip in the world, with flights arriving from Glasgow according to the tides.
The circular road around the island is about 14 miles long and easily cycled in a day, passing machair grassland, standing stones, and wide Atlantic views. Castlebay has a hotel, a few pubs, and a strong sense of Gaelic identity. From the highest point on the island, Heaval, you can see all the way to the smaller, beach-fringed island of Vatersay, now linked to Barra by a causeway.
