Scotland's Secret Bunker

Cold War nuclear command bunker hidden beneath a farmhouse west of Crail.

Scotland's Secret Bunker is a Cold War museum hidden beneath a farmhouse west of Crail. Inside are communications rooms, dormitories, command spaces, and the uneasy atmosphere of a government preparing for nuclear war.

It is one of the strangest and most memorable sights near the East Neuk villages. The contrast with Crail's harbour and fishing cottages could hardly be stronger, which is exactly why it is worth the detour.

The bunker was designed to keep government and military command functioning after a nuclear attack. Its deliberately ordinary farmhouse cover is part of the chill: apocalypse hidden under rural Fife.
