Smoo Cave

Vast sea cave near Durness with an 80-foot underground waterfall

Smoo Cave is just five to ten minutes' walk from the centre of Durness and is one of the largest sea caves in Britain. Inside, an 80-foot underground waterfall crashes into a flooded cavern, and in heavy rain the noise is deafening and the spray fills the air like a power shower. The cave estuary, seen from outside, frames a view of the sea that has been compared to unspoilt New Zealand. A path up to the headland on the right of the cave adds more dramatic scenery, though one section requires care.
