The valleys of the Spey and its tributaries hold more malt whisky distilleries per square mile than anywhere else on earth — over 50 operating distilleries within roughly 40 miles of Elgin. The Malt Whisky Trail is a signposted driving route linking eight of the most visitor-friendly: Glenfiddich and The Balvenie at Dufftown, The Macallan and Aberlour's Strathisla on Strathspey, Cardhu and Glenlivet further south, and Benromach and Glen Grant closer to Elgin.
Most distilleries charge for tours; Glenfiddich offers a free basic tour. The Speyside Cooperage at Craigellachie is worth adding — the last working cooperage in Scotland where you can watch coopers repair and build oak casks by hand, a skill that has changed little in centuries. The best distillery visits need to be booked in advance, especially during summer.
