Monteviot is the seat of the Marquess of Lothian, set where the River Teviot curls through wooded Borders countryside. The house is still a private family home, so the real visitor draw is the garden: terraces, lawns, riverside planting, and views that feel calmer and less managed than the grander show gardens farther south.
It works best as a half-day outing from Jedburgh, especially if you are already following abbey and country-house history through the Borders. Check opening dates before setting out, as access is seasonal and can vary around private use of the estate.
