The Linlithgow Canal Centre sits on the Union Canal at the south end of Linlithgow town, run by the Linlithgow Union Canal Society — a voluntary organisation that has restored several traditional canal boats and offers trips on the canal in summer. The boats travel westward along the canal through pleasant countryside, passing the Avon Aqueduct, one of the longest and tallest aqueducts in Scotland.
The centre has a small museum covering the history of the Union Canal, which was built between 1817 and 1822 to carry coal and goods between Edinburgh and Falkirk. The trip boats operate on weekend afternoons from Easter to September, and the Avon Aqueduct crossing, about 30 minutes from Linlithgow, is the highlight. A small tearoom operates at the centre in summer.
