Borders Abbeys Way

65-mile circular trail linking the four great Borders abbeys

The Borders Abbeys Way is a 65-mile waymarked circular path linking the four ruined abbeys of Melrose, Dryburgh, Jedburgh, and Kelso — all founded in the 12th century during the reign of King David I. The full circuit takes most walkers four to five days and follows river valleys, farmland, and quiet Borders countryside throughout.

Most people walk individual sections rather than the whole route. The 13-mile leg from Melrose to Kelso along the Tweed is the most popular day section, taking in Dryburgh Abbey (where Sir Walter Scott is buried) and Scott's View. Buses run between the abbey towns for one-way walks.
