Melrose Sevens

The original seven-a-side rugby tournament, every April

The Melrose Sevens tournament is one of the great events in the Borders calendar — the original seven-a-side rugby competition, played every April at the Greenyards ground a few minutes' walk from the town centre. Clubs come from across Scotland and increasingly from around the world; the day-long format means dozens of short matches with plenty of beer, music, and characteristic Borders atmosphere.

Tickets sell out months in advance. If you are anywhere near Melrose on the second Saturday in April, plan ahead. Outside the tournament, the Greenyards is still in use for regular Borders League fixtures.

A story
Seven-a-side rugby was invented in Melrose in April 1883, when local butcher Ned Haig proposed a shortened version of the game as a way of raising money for the cash-strapped Melrose RFC. The format caught on immediately; by the 1920s it had spread across the rugby-playing world, and it eventually became an Olympic sport at Rio 2016. Every April since 1883 Melrose has hosted the original Melrose Sevens tournament at the town's Greenyards ground.
