Glen Moray Distillery

Glen Moray is the easiest distillery to visit on the outskirts of Elgin, and one of the most welcoming for newcomers to Scotch whisky. The site, converted from an old brewery in 1897, sits on the banks of the River Lossie just a short walk from the town centre. Tours cover the full production process — malting, mashing, fermentation, distillation, and maturation — and conclude with a tasting of three or four expressions.

The distillery produces a range that leans toward accessible, fruit-forward single malts, with expressions ranging from unaged new make to various aged bottlings. A shop sells the full range, including occasional distillery exclusives. Open most days; booking online is recommended in summer.

A story
Glen Moray's distillery buildings were converted from a Victorian brewery in 1897, and the site still occupies the same spot on the banks of the River Lossie at the western edge of Elgin. The distillery is one of the most approachable on the Malt Whisky Trail — tours are detailed and unhurried, and the whiskies themselves are lighter and more fruit-forward than many Speyside expressions, partly because the distillery uses a particularly long fermentation time.
