Pluscarden Abbey, founded in 1230, is one of the oldest and most beautiful ecclesiastical buildings in northern Scotland — and unlike most of its contemporaries, it is still in use. Benedictine monks live here, maintain the grounds, and welcome visitors to the church and gardens. The medieval stonework, the stained glass, the smell of incense — this is not a museum but a functioning monastery in a valley that feels quite separate from the twenty-first century.
Visitors are welcome to attend services, including Vespers and Compline in the evening. The abbey shop sells honey, fudge, and Gregorian chant recordings made by the monks. The site is free to enter. It lies about ten kilometres south of Elgin, down a single-track road through farmland.
