Cuween Hill Chambered Cairn is one of Orkney's compact, atmospheric prehistoric sites: a low entrance passage leading into a stone chamber built more than 5,000 years ago. It is smaller and less famous than Maeshowe, but the intimacy is part of the appeal.
Bring a torch and wear shoes you do not mind scraping, because entering the cairn means crouching through the passage. The hilltop setting above Finstown also gives good views, making it an easy archaeological stop between Kirkwall and the west mainland sights.
