Stanydale Temple is the essential sight near Walls. The large Neolithic enclosure dates from around 2000-2500 BC and was once timber-roofed, a remarkable detail in a landscape with hardly any trees.
No one is certain whether it was ritual, domestic, defensive, or some mix of all three. The walk in is muddy and understated, but the site has the quiet force of very old Shetland.
