Walls

West Mainland Shetland village near prehistoric sites, rugged coast, and ferries to Papa Stour.

Walls, or Waas, is a small fishing village on the west Mainland of Shetland. It is not a town in the usual sense, but a base for a sparse and beautiful corner of the islands: moorland roads, old archaeology, island ferries, and sea cliffs facing the Atlantic.

The best nearby sight is Stanydale Temple, a Neolithic enclosure whose purpose is still argued over. South of the village, Culswick Broch and the Steep Islands add Iron Age history and rugged coastline.

Walls also matters because it links to harder-to-reach places. The ferry to Foula leaves from the village pier, while West Burrafirth, farther north, is the jumping-off point for Papa Stour, a tiny island of caves, arches, stacks, and rough Atlantic weather.
