The Trefriw Woollen Mills, in the village of Trefriw about 5 miles south of Conwy in the Conwy Valley, is one of the last working woollen mills in Wales. The mill has been in operation since the 1820s and still produces Welsh tapestry fabrics — the double-weave wool throws and bedspreads that were a standard Welsh cottage export for two centuries. The turbines that power the machinery run off the River Crafnant.
You can watch the weaving in progress during working hours (the looms are noisy and impressive) and buy fabric directly from the mill shop. The tapestry patterns are traditional Celtic and geometric designs, most of them in the earthy purples, greens, and reds associated with Welsh woollen work. It is worth combining with a walk in the Crafnant Valley above the village, which offers good low-level walking with a lake at the head of the valley.
