Mostyn

A contemporary art gallery in a striking 1902 building, Wales's most ambitious visual arts space outside Cardiff

Mostyn is the principal contemporary art gallery in north Wales — a serious institution showing international and Welsh artists in a Grade II listed 1902 building on Vaughan Street. It was founded as the Mostyn Art Gallery by Lady Augusta Mostyn, the only woman in Britain to have founded a public art gallery in the Victorian period.

The gallery reopened in 2010 after a five-year, £4.6 million redevelopment that added three new spaces behind the original facade and reorganised the building around a central atrium. The exhibition programme covers a broad range — recent shows have included work by Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin, Bedwyr Williams and a strong line of mid-career Welsh and Welsh-resident artists. There is also a permanent café and a good shop.

Admission is free. The gallery is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10.30am to 5pm. Allow 60 to 90 minutes. It sits on a quiet street one block back from the seafront, a short walk from the pier.
