Bala

Welsh lakeside town on Llyn Tegid, known for water sports and mountain-edge scenery.

Bala sits at the northeast end of Llyn Tegid, Wales's largest natural lake, with the hills of southern Eryri rising around it. It is small, Welsh-speaking, and outdoorsy in a way that feels distinct from the busier Snowdon villages to the north.

The lake is the obvious anchor. Llyn Tegid gives Bala its view, its sailing, and much of its summer life. Bala Lake Railway follows the shore by narrow-gauge steam train, while the National White Water Centre on the Tryweryn makes the town one of Britain's better white-water bases.

Bala is not polished in the resort sense, which is part of the appeal. Use it for lake time, rafting, walking, and a quieter Eryri base where Welsh is part of the everyday soundscape rather than a decorative sign.
